Venous Leg Ulcers: What they are, why they happen, and how to recognize them
June 18, 2025A new opportunity is now available for residents of Southwest Florida: a clinical study focused on venous leg ulcers, a chronic and often painful condition that affects thousands across the region. This study, conducted at our Fort Myers-based research clinic, is designed to explore improved treatment options and offer much-needed relief for those suffering from lower leg ulcers.
What are Venous Leg Ulcers?
Venous ulcers are open sores typically located on the lower legs, below the knee. They are caused by poor blood circulation in the veins and can be difficult to heal. These wounds not only cause discomfort but can also lead to serious health complications if left untreated. They are more common in older adults and individuals with venous insufficiency, but can affect anyone.
